Energy Production

Energy production rose by 6% in 2018–19 to 19,711 petajoules. This is consistent with the trend in energy production over the past decade. Coal accounted for 66% of Australia’s energy production in 2018–19, followed by natural gas.

Australia’s energy production has become increasingly export-oriented. Australia is a net exporter of energy, with net exports equal to around 68% of production.

This chart has PJ on the y axis and years on the x axis. There are 5 series representing different fuel types. Black coal is dark blue. Brown coal is light blue. Oil and LPG is teal, natural gas is grey and renewables are dark teal. Black coal has been the dominant fuel produced throughout the time series and has driven the overall increasing trend historically. However natural gas is now increasing as well. All other series remain about the same throughout the time series.

Production is dark blue, consumption is light blue and net exports are teal coloured. The graph shows all series increasing, however production and exports increase faster than consumption, which is flattening off. Consumption and exports both sit underneath production. When combined together the trend is the same as the prodution trend
